Privacy policy

RentOrOwn.info exists to help you answer one question: rent or buy? We believe the answer should not cost you your inbox. This page explains, in plain English, what we do and don't do with your data.

What we collect

• Your calculator inputs. Everything you type into the calculator is stored in the URL and in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device unless you copy the link and share it.
• Your consent choice. One small entry in local storage (ror.consent.v1) remembers whether you accepted or rejected non-essential storage, so we don't ask you every visit.
• Aggregate request logs. Our host, Cloudflare, keeps standard access logs (IP, user agent, path, timestamp) for security and abuse prevention. We do not join these to anything else and we don't build user profiles from them.
• An anonymous page-view count. When a page loads, and when a calculation finishes or you copy a share link, your browser sends an empty request to a path on this site — for example /beacon/visit/learn/rent-vs-buy-chicago/. That URL is the whole message: it names the event and the page, and carries no body, no cookie, no identifier, no session ID, and no referrer. We store nothing; the request is only counted in the same aggregate Cloudflare logs described above. There is no third-party analytics service involved, so there is nothing to opt in to — but if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, we send nothing at all.

What we do not collect

• No email addresses. There is no account system.
• No names, phone numbers, or contact details.
• No cross-site tracking or fingerprinting.
• No session-replay tools (Hotjar, FullStory, Clarity, LogRocket, or equivalents).
• No analytics cookies, ever — our page-view count uses none. No advertising cookies until you explicitly turn them on in Cookie settings.
• No third-party analytics service. Our page-view count never leaves this domain.

Cookies and local storage

• Essential (always on). Your calculator inputs and your consent choice are stored in your browser's local storage. These never leave your device.
• Analytics (no cookies, nothing to turn on). Our page-view count is a bare request to a path on this site. It sets no cookie, reads no cookie, and writes nothing to local storage, so there is no consent toggle for it — there is no storage on your device to consent to. It is suppressed entirely when your browser asserts Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track.
• Advertising (off by default). If we later run ads from Google AdSense, Ezoic, or Media.net, those partners may set cookies to show relevant ads — only after you opt in. You can revoke consent at any time via the "Cookie settings" link in the footer.

Third-party services

• Cloudflare hosts the site and terminates TLS. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
• Future advertising partners (Google AdSense, Ezoic, Media.net) will only be loaded after you opt in via the consent banner. Their own privacy policies will apply to any data they collect through the ads they serve.

Your rights

Under GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California), you have the right to access, correct, delete, and export your personal data, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of it. Because we do not collect personal data, there is nothing on our servers to access, correct, delete, or export. To clear the data your browser holds locally, use "Cookie settings" to reset your consent, or clear this site's data in your browser's privacy settings.

"Do Not Track" and Global Privacy Control

We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as an opt-out of advertising and analytics. If your browser sends GPC, we treat it as "reject non-essential" and will not ask you again unless you clear it.

Children

RentOrOwn.info is a general-audience financial tool and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

If we materially change how data is handled, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where the change affects consent, prompt you to review your choices.
